As China's most modern and internationally connected city (after perhaps Shanghai), Shenzhen is surprisingly easy for international visitors. Here's your complete practical guide.

**144-hour visa-free transit:** For citizens of 54 countries transiting through Bao'an Airport. Travel permitted within Guangdong province (including Guangzhou, Zhuhai, and the airports).
**Shenzhen Special Economic Zone Visa (口岸签证):** Citizens of some countries can obtain a 5-day visa at the Luohu, Futian, or Shekou border checkpoints when entering from Hong Kong. Check eligibility for your nationality.
Getting Around
**Metro:** Shenzhen's metro has 16 lines and is expanding rapidly. Clean, efficient, and affordable (¥2-14). Covers all major areas. Use Alipay to scan at gates — no ticket needed.
**DiDi:** Works seamlessly. Shenzhen also has a large fleet of electric taxis (BYD) — starting fare ¥10.
**Shared Bikes:** Meituan Bikes (scan via Meituan or Alipay) are everywhere. Great for waterfront cycling.
**Note:** Shenzhen is the world's first city with a 100% electric bus fleet.
Money & Payments
Shenzhen is one of the world's most cashless cities. Even street food vendors and vending machines use mobile payments exclusively. Set up Alipay (with Tour Pass for international cards) before arrival. WeChat Pay also works. Some smaller vendors genuinely cannot accept cash, though they're required to by law.
Business Travel
Shenzhen is ground zero for China's tech industry:
**Major Companies HQ'd in Shenzhen:** - Huawei (telecoms) - Tencent (WeChat, gaming) - BYD (electric vehicles) - DJI (drones) - OnePlus / OPPO / Vivo (smartphones) - Foxconn (electronics manufacturing)
**Key Business Districts:** - **Futian CBD:** Financial center, convention center, Tencent offices - **Nanshan/Hi-Tech Park:** Tech company cluster — Tencent, DJI, many startups - **Qianhai Free Trade Zone:** Financial services and fintech - **Longhua/Longgang:** Manufacturing and Huawei campus
**Business Hotels:** St. Regis (Futian CBD), Four Seasons (Futian), Hilton Shekou (for Hong Kong ferry access).
Hong Kong Day Trips
Shenzhen's proximity to Hong Kong makes it easy to combine both cities: - Take the HSR from Futian Station to West Kowloon (14 min) - Or cross at Luohu/Futian border checkpoints and use HK's MTR - Remember: You need separate visa arrangements for Hong Kong and mainland China
Weather
Shenzhen has a tropical/subtropical climate. Hot and humid from May to October (30-35°C) with typhoon risk. November to March is mild and pleasant (15-25°C). Pack light, breathable clothing and an umbrella year-round.
