Chongqing Practical Tips

Chongqing's unique mountainous terrain means navigation can be confusing — GPS often disagrees with reality because you might be on a different vertical level than expected. This guide helps you navigate the mountain city like a pro.

Getting to Chongqing

### By Air Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (CKG) is one of China's busiest airports, located 21 km north of downtown. Direct international flights connect to Seoul, Tokyo, Bangkok, Singapore, London, Dubai, and many more.

**Airport to City Center:** - **Metro Line 10:** The most reliable option. Takes about 40 minutes to the Jiefangbei area. Runs 6:30 AM - 10:30 PM. - **Airport Express Bus:** ¥15, runs every 20-30 minutes to various city areas. - **Taxi/DiDi:** About ¥60-80, 30-50 minutes depending on traffic.

### By High-Speed Rail Chongqing has two main HSR stations: - **Chongqing North (重庆北站):** Most HSR services, connected to Metro Lines 3, 10 - **Chongqing West (重庆西站):** Growing HSR hub, Metro Line 5

Key routes: - Chengdu → Chongqing: 1-1.5 hours (frequent service) - Xi'an → Chongqing: 4-5 hours - Guiyang → Chongqing: 2 hours - Wuhan → Chongqing: 5-6 hours

Visa-Free Transit

Chongqing is eligible for China's **144-hour visa-free transit** policy. Eligible nationals from 54 countries can stay up to 6 days when transiting through Jiangbei Airport. Travel is permitted within Chongqing municipality — which is enormous (82,400 sq km, roughly the size of Austria) and includes the Dazu Rock Carvings and Wulong Karst scenery.

Getting Around

**Metro:** Chongqing's metro/monorail system has 12 lines covering most tourist areas. The monorail (Lines 2 & 3) offers scenic elevated rides through the city. Fares ¥2-7. Use Alipay to scan at gates.

**Important metro navigation tips:** - Chongqing's metro stations can have multiple exits at vastly different elevations - The same 'ground floor' of a building might be Floor 1 from one street and Floor 10 from another - Always check which exit level you need!

**Taxis & DiDi:** Starting fare ¥10. DiDi works well but drivers may call to clarify your exact location due to the 3D terrain. Be specific about which level/road you're on.

**Cable Cars:** The Yangtze River Cableway is both a tourist attraction and a functioning transit link.

Money & Payments

Alipay and WeChat Pay are accepted everywhere. International visitors can link foreign credit cards to Alipay's Tour Pass. Carry ¥500 cash as backup for small vendors and older establishments.

Business Travel

Chongqing is a major industrial and economic center in western China: - **Liangjiang New Area:** A national-level development zone with automotive, electronics, and tech industries - **Chongqing Hi-Tech Zone:** Home to HP, Foxconn, and many tech companies - **Chongqing Free Trade Zone:** International trade and logistics hub - **Guoyuan Port:** Inland waterway port for Yangtze River shipping

The city is a key node in the China-Europe railway freight route and the International Land-Sea Trade Corridor.

Weather & Packing

Chongqing has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures routinely exceed 40°C. Spring and autumn are most comfortable. The city is famously foggy — locals joke you rarely see the sun. Pack comfortable walking shoes with good grip for the steep hills, and bring rain gear.
