西安:古都の完全ガイド
Xi'an: The Ancient Capital
Xi'an (西安), formerly known as Chang'an, served as the capital for 13 dynasties over a span of more than 1,100 years. As the eastern terminus of the Silk Road, this city is a treasure trove of Chinese history and culture. Today, Xi'an seamlessly blends its imperial past with a lively modern food scene and growing tech industry.
Why Visit Xi'an?
Xi'an is home to the world-famous Terracotta Warriors, one of the most significant archaeological discoveries ever made. But beyond this headline attraction, the city offers the best-preserved ancient city wall in China, a thriving Muslim Quarter with incredible street food, and easy access to sacred Mount Hua. For history lovers, Xi'an rivals Beijing and is far less overwhelming for first-time visitors to China.
Top Attractions
### Terracotta Warriors Museum Located about 40 km east of the city center, the Terracotta Warriors are an absolute must-see. Over 8,000 life-sized clay soldiers, horses, and chariots were buried with Emperor Qin Shi Huang in 210 BC. Take Bus 306 (游5) from Xi'an Railway Station or book a half-day tour. Arrive early to beat the crowds — the museum opens at 8:30 AM.
### Ancient City Wall The 13.7 km Ming Dynasty wall encircles the old city and is wide enough to cycle on top of. Rent a bicycle at the South Gate (永宁门) for about ¥45 and complete the full loop in 90 minutes. The wall is especially beautiful at sunset when the watchtowers are illuminated.
### Bell Tower & Drum Tower These twin landmarks sit at the heart of the old city. The Bell Tower anchors the intersection of Xi'an's four main avenues, while the Drum Tower guards the entrance to the Muslim Quarter. Traditional performances are held throughout the day.
Food & Dining
Xi'an's food scene is legendary. The Muslim Quarter (回民街) is the most famous food street, but locals often prefer the parallel Dashaomen street for more authentic, less touristy options.

Cultural Experiences

In the evening, catch the Tang Dynasty Show for a spectacular display of traditional music and dance, or stroll through the illuminated Tang Paradise park.
Day Trips
**Mount Hua (华山):** One of China's Five Sacred Mountains, about 2 hours east by high-speed train from Xi'an North Station. Famous for its terrifying plank walks and stunning sunrise views.
**Cuihua Mountain:** A closer option (30 km south), perfect for a half-day hike through dramatic geological formations.
Getting Around
Xi'an has a growing metro system (8 lines operating) that covers major tourist sites. Line 2 connects the Railway Station to the South Gate and Qujiang area. Taxis are affordable (starting at ¥9), and DiDi ride-hailing works well. For the Terracotta Warriors, take the dedicated tourist bus from the Railway Station.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer the most pleasant weather. Summers can be hot (35°C+), and winters are cold and dry. Avoid Chinese National Holiday week (October 1-7) when crowds are extreme.
