Guilin Practical Tips: Transit, Visa & Travel Essentials
Guilin Practical Tips
Guilin is one of China's most visitor-friendly destinations, but a little advance planning goes a long way. Here's everything you need to know.
Getting to Guilin
### By Air Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL) is 28 km from the city center. Direct international flights connect to Seoul (Incheon), Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, and Osaka seasonally. Major domestic routes include Beijing (3h), Shanghai (2.5h), Guangzhou (1h), and Chengdu (2h).
**Airport to City Center:** - **Airport Bus:** ¥20, runs every 30 minutes, takes about 40 minutes to the Railway Station area. - **Taxi:** About ¥100-120, 40-50 minutes depending on traffic. - **DiDi:** Similar cost to taxi, more convenient.
**Airport to Yangshuo:** Direct airport buses run to Yangshuo (¥50, 90 minutes). Alternatively, take a taxi (about ¥300).
### By High-Speed Rail Guilin has two HSR stations: - **Guilin North (桂林北站):** Main HSR station for long-distance trains - **Guilin West (桂林西站):** Some services stop here
Key routes: - Guangzhou South → Guilin: 2.5-3 hours - Shenzhen North → Guilin: 3-3.5 hours - Nanning → Guilin: 2.5 hours - Changsha → Guilin: 2.5 hours
For Yangshuo, you can also take HSR to Yangshuo Station (阳朔站), though it's 30 km from Yangshuo town center.
Visa-Free Transit
Guilin is eligible for China's **144-hour visa-free transit** policy. Eligible passport holders from 54 countries can stay up to 6 days without a visa when transiting through Guilin Liangjiang Airport. Travel is permitted within the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Getting Around
**Within Guilin City:** - City buses are cheap (¥1-2) but signage is mostly in Chinese - Taxis start at ¥9 - DiDi ride-hailing works well and shows English destination names - Walking is pleasant along the riverside areas
**Guilin to Yangshuo:** - Li River Cruise: 4 hours, ¥210-350 depending on boat class - Direct bus: 90 minutes, ¥25-40 - HSR to Yangshuo Station + shuttle: faster but less scenic
**Around Yangshuo:** - Rent an electric bike (¥50-80/day) — the best way to explore - Bamboo rafting on Yulong River: ¥200-300 per raft
Money & Communication
**Payments:** Alipay (with international card linked via Tour Pass) is accepted everywhere including small vendors. Carry ¥500-1000 cash as backup.
**SIM Card:** Buy a prepaid SIM at the airport or any China Mobile store. About ¥100 for 7 days with good data.
**Language:** English is limited outside tourist hotspots. Download Baidu Maps, Google Translate (with offline Chinese pack), and a translation app. Yangshuo has better English coverage than Guilin city.
Weather & Packing
Guilin has a subtropical climate. Summers are hot and humid (30-35°C) with frequent rain. Spring and autumn are mild and pleasant. Pack rain gear year-round, comfortable walking shoes, and sunscreen. A light waterproof jacket is essential for Li River cruises.
Safety Tips
Guilin is very safe. Main concerns are occasional tourist overcharging — always agree on prices before bamboo raft rides or taxi trips. Stay hydrated in summer. Drink bottled water only.
