Guangzhou Practical Tips: Transit, Visa & Business Essentials

Guangzhou Practical Tips

As one of China's three main gateway cities (alongside Beijing and Shanghai), Guangzhou is well-equipped for international travelers. Here's everything you need to know.

Getting to Guangzhou

### By Air Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) is one of the world's busiest airports and the hub for China Southern Airlines. Direct flights from virtually every major international city.

**Airport to City Center:** - **Metro Line 3:** The most reliable option, 45 minutes to Tianhe CBD (Tiyu Xilu station). Runs 6:10 AM - 11:30 PM. Cost: ¥8-12. - **Airport Express Bus:** Multiple routes to different city areas, ¥12-36, runs until midnight. - **Taxi/DiDi:** About ¥120-150, 40-60 minutes to Tianhe. - **Maglev (planned):** A maglev line is under construction.

### By High-Speed Rail Guangzhou South Station is one of China's largest HSR hubs: - Hong Kong West Kowloon → Guangzhou South: 47 minutes - Shenzhen North → Guangzhou South: 30 minutes - Changsha → Guangzhou: 2.5 hours - Guilin → Guangzhou: 2.5 hours - Shanghai → Guangzhou: 7 hours

Note: Guangzhou South Station is far from downtown (30 min by metro). Guangzhou East and Guangzhou stations are more central.

Visa-Free Transit

Guangzhou is eligible for China's **144-hour visa-free transit** policy. Citizens of 54 countries can stay up to 6 days when transiting through Baiyun Airport. Travel is permitted within Guangdong province — meaning you could visit Shenzhen, Zhuhai (Macau border), Foshan, or Zhaoqing on the same transit.

Canton Fair

The China Import & Export Fair (Canton Fair) is the world's largest trade fair, held biannually in April and October at the Pazhou Complex. If attending: - Register online in advance at cantonfair.org.cn - Book hotels months ahead — prices double during the fair - The Pazhou area has dedicated metro stations (Line 8) - Allow extra time for airport and metro congestion

Getting Around

**Metro:** Guangzhou's metro system has 16 lines covering the entire city. Clean, efficient, and cheap (¥2-14). Use Alipay to scan at gates. The metro map is extensive — download a metro app.

**Taxis/DiDi:** Starting fare ¥12. DiDi works well. Guangzhou traffic can be heavy — metro is often faster.

**Bus:** Extensive bus network but signage is mostly Chinese. Best for local neighborhoods.

Money & Payments

Alipay and WeChat Pay are universally accepted. Link your international card to Alipay's Tour Pass. Carry ¥500-1000 cash for backup. Major hotels and restaurants accept Visa/Mastercard.

Business Districts

  • **Tianhe CBD / Zhujiang New Town:** Main financial district with major banks, consulting firms, and corporate HQs
  • **Pazhou:** Canton Fair complex and convention center area
  • **Nansha Free Trade Zone:** Port and logistics hub
  • **Guangzhou Development District:** Manufacturing and tech
  • **Panyu:** Growing tech park with many e-commerce companies

Day Trips

  • **Foshan (佛山):** 30 minutes by metro, famous for martial arts (Wong Fei-hung), ceramics, and Cantonese opera
  • **Shenzhen:** 30 minutes by HSR for tech tourism
  • **Kaiping Diaolou:** UNESCO World Heritage watchtowers, 2 hours by bus

Weather

Guangzhou has a humid subtropical/tropical climate. Hot and humid from May to October with temperatures exceeding 35°C and frequent rain. The cooler dry season (November to March) is the most pleasant for sightseeing. Typhoon season runs June to October — check weather forecasts.
