24 Hours in Chengdu: A Layover Worth Taking

Chengdu is one of China's best cities for a short stopover, thanks to the 144-hour visa-free transit policy, excellent metro connections, and attractions that are conveniently clustered in the city center. Whether you're on a layover or squeezing in a quick visit between connecting flights, here's how to experience the best of Chengdu in just one day.

Early Morning (7:00 AM - 10:30 AM): Panda Base

If you're going to do one thing in Chengdu, make it the pandas. Take the first metro to Panda Avenue station and arrive at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding when the gates open at 7:30 AM. Morning is when the pandas are most active and adorable — you'll see them eating breakfast, playing, and generally being the laziest bears on Earth.

**Pro Tip:** Take the shuttle bus to the back of the park first, then walk downhill through the enclosures. This way you'll see the pandas before the big tour groups arrive. The moon bear and red panda areas are often overlooked gems.

Late Morning (11:00 AM - 12:30 PM): Wenshu Monastery

Head back to central Chengdu for a dose of calm at Wenshu Monastery. This Tang Dynasty temple is free to enter and offers a peaceful escape with incense-filled halls, koi ponds, and ancient trees. The surrounding Wenshufang quarter has excellent street food — grab a bowl of spicy dan dan noodles or sweet water noodles for a quick, authentic lunch.

Midday (12:30 PM - 2:30 PM): People's Park & Heming Teahouse

This is non-negotiable. Walk to People's Park, find a bamboo chair at Heming Teahouse, order a jasmine gaiwan cha (covered-bowl tea), and simply sit. Watch the ear cleaners ply their ancient trade, the dancers waltz beside the lake, and the card players argue over mahjong. This is Chengdu's soul. A bowl of tea costs ¥20-30 and comes with unlimited hot water refills — the best value cultural experience in China.

Afternoon (2:30 PM - 5:00 PM): Kuanzhai Alley & Chunxi Road

Browse the restored Qing Dynasty courtyards of Kuanzhai Alley (Wide & Narrow Alleys), sampling street snacks as you go — san da pao, egg-wrapped sweet potato cakes, and rabbit head (for the adventurous). Then metro to Chunxi Road for a different vibe: luxury shopping at Taikoo Li, selfies with the giant IFS panda, and serious people-watching.

Evening (5:00 PM - 8:00 PM): Hot Pot Dinner

You absolutely cannot leave Chengdu without eating hot pot. Long Chaoshou near Chunxi Road offers an excellent all-in-one Sichuan snack experience if you prefer variety, or go full hot pot at Shu Daxia or Xiaolongkan. Order the yuan yang (split) pot if you need a non-spicy side — no judgment.

Night (8:00 PM onwards): Jinli Street or Jiuyanqiao

Choose your own adventure: Jinli Ancient Street is magical at night with its red lanterns reflecting off timber facades — great for photos and souvenir shopping. Or head to Jiuyanqiao (Nine-Eye Bridge) bar street for cocktails alongside the river. Jellyfish bar serves excellent Sichuan-inspired cocktails in a stylish riverside setting.
